Progress Report 1
For my Social Media Project, I wanted to look into websites I’ve never heard of before. In order to do that, I took a look at Steve’s list for “Getting Started”. Upon looking at his list, I came across a few names I knew of like Flickr and Tumblr. I decided after hearing good things from friends, I would look into these websites. However, when looking at Steve’s list, I came across things I didn’t know like Wetpaint and CiteULike. So, to say the least, I became intrigued.
Upon signing up for CiteULike, I automatically liked the URL – who wouldn’t like “Cite You Like”? I mean, let’s be honest. During the sign up, they asked me things that I liked and what my field of interest was. So, once again, I was all in. After signing up? Well, I have no idea how to use the damn site! Now isn’t that a shame? I guess you’re going to have to stay tuned until next time to hear another update.
Alright, so let’s head over to Wetpaint. After getting to the website, the first thing that I saw was that Lily Allen has a third nipple. How hilarious! Okay, I can handle this. You can see what’s “trending” at the top, and as of now it’s American Idol, Jersey Shore, and Spoilers. Gossip column, I thought. Hm, I’m usually not into these types of websites – but to hell with it! I figure, if I’m experiencing something new for a class, I mine as well roll with the punches.
On to the next: Flickr. This doesn’t seem too hard. What, do people just like, post pictures? How weird, maybe things will get better. Alright so what does this website have to offer me? Hm, let’s explore most recent uploads. Well, people are just posting pictures of themselves. What good is this doing for me? Wait, what’s this? Let’s look at “color” for popular tags. This is kind of interesting… I’ll definitely look at nice scenery and some beautiful architecture any day. Alright, I think I’ve got it now. Looks like I’ll have to keep browsing some interesting subjects to get what I really want.
Last but not least, Tumblr. Can you tell I’m opinionated yet? If not, you’re going to. I like blogs, I really do. I’m kind of shocked I have yet to get a tumblr (looks like this project is the perfect opportunity). Well, along with any blog site, I definitely need to pick a theme. As I’m sure you can imagine, this is where most of my creativeness comes to play. I’m excited to start blogging again. Perhaps if I keep track of these websites, I’ll steer away from my addiction with Facebook. After all, people go from one addiction to the next, right?
So there you have it folks. Thus far, those are the four websites I am planning on entering and exploring for this social media project:I’m looking forward to having as much fun as I can with this. And hey, who knows! Maybe if I think these sites are cool enough, they’ll get promoted through my various sites I currently partake in. Until next time!
Signing off,
Michelle.
I think you’ve got a good start here, Michelle. One of the things I am certain you will see with these different media is that your results will vary– that is, I am certain that some of these things will prove to be a lot more interesting than others, and that’s okay. But try to “inhabit” these sites a bit to see what they’re like and to make connections with the readings.
